How to Approach the Free Boiler Grant Scheme

Under the Energy Company Obligation, ECO; the Government introduced the free boiler grant scheme with an aim of helping millions of low-income families to fuel their homes. This project was launched in 2013 after the Government noted that a reasonable percentage of the population spends more than 10 percent of their annual income on fuel/ energy costs.

This scheme invites for applicants who meet a certain criterion based on the annual income and another set of factors. Those who meet the correct combination of income-related benefits, income support, tax credits or JSA; could be lucky enough as their old boilers get replaced with new A-rated boilers for free or with subsidized costs. The current gas, LPG or oil boiler should be at least over five years old for the replacement to be granted.

Besides the above mention factors, here are the other credentials the homeowner must meet.

  • Only private tenants and homeowners can apply for the grant. Tenants on private rentals can get permission from their landlords.
  • Pensioners should be in receipt of pension Guarantee Credit in order to qualify for application, otherwise, a state pension isn’t enough.
  • The boiler should be rated between B and C or B and G otherwise: A and B rating isn’t eligible for replacement.
  • Other supporting components include a disability living allowance, a child under 16 years of age or under 20 years (not yet in higher education program). Being over 60 years of age with limited capability for work.

The ECO grants close in September 2018. So hurry if you can. As stated, a complete replacement or acquirement of a new boiler doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free of charge, however; the grant is free. In most cases, you’ll have to pay a small part of the cost towards a new boiler.

The government boiler scheme isn’t repayable meaning there’s no money back once you have qualified for the new boiler replacement or instalment. The terms of service are simple and straightforward, since the qualifying conditions are very specific. Again, the amount of grant you’ll get depends on the efficiency of your home.
